The obvious great advantage of materials such as metals (mainly steel) and glass is their high durability. Although metal or glass bottles require more initial energy, they can actually be used permanently. In other words, its life cycle is much longer than that of PET bottles.
They are obviously reusable. Both metal and glass can be stored for a long time without use. They can be washed in the dishwasher, reused as many times as needed, and sterilized at home.
The glass bottle you bought today can be passed down from generation to generation in the family (unless you are particularly clumsy). Jam jars made of glass are not useless. The same applies to metals, although metal bottles tend to become quite dented.
The advantage of glass is that it can be kept cool in the refrigerator, so it is very suitable for use at home in the summer. Metal bottles, especially insulated, can keep liquids cold for hours, some even days. This makes them especially useful at work because they can be reused to keep our coffee hot.
Cost-effective solution
According to calculations (depending on the brand and size of the bottle), manufacturing and shipping bottles account for 90% of the price you pay for water. In other words, a bottle of one liter and one euro contains 0.10 euros of water and 0.90 euros of PET plastic.
In contrast, it is a bargain to spend 4 Euros for a glass bottle that is easy to clean like this one. Even if it is empty, you must add water yourself. Yes, it does cost four times, but it will last forever. The same applies to metal bottles, even if it is an insulated bottle worth 15 Euros.
What if I cannot avoid drinking bottled water? Can you drink 15 times? If the answer is yes-no doubt it will be-then you will save money.
Indeed, tap water is not very good anywhere, especially on the Mediterranean coast. Sometimes, its calcium content is so high that you can even taste it while drinking it. Many families choose bottled water. But there are various solutions available.
One of them is to buy large bottles instead of small bottles. If we choose an 8-liter container instead of a 1-liter bottle, our impact on the environment will be much smaller. Set up an account at home. This is what I calculated:
Although it will vary from brand to brand, the results are always similar. As the volume increases, the number of grams per liter of PET will decrease.
Another option is to buy a calcium filter. Follow the recommendations of the Consumer Association to avoid miracle products and buy long-life filters. When it needs to be replaced, this will minimize our impact.
There is no doubt that sometimes it is still unavoidable to buy plastic bottles. But this is not the case at home or in the office, and you have no reason not to use glass bottles. Even if you travel frequently, you can carry a 500ml insulated metal vial filled with cold water with you.
The plastic bottles of our time are like the burning cars of the last century: an environmental problem that must be solved from the demand side. If we do not do this, its negative effects will eventually cause losses.
Pollution (of any kind) is not something that makes headlines out of thin air. We are all responsible for the pollution between us, and we have the ability to make small actions to avoid irreversible environmental impacts.
Many times, we are not aware of the small actions to protect the environment. Especially those that we don’t make and therefore have no impact at all. The best impact on the environment is no impact at all.
